Gravity (Movie Review)

The “1-4-0″: Best. Movie. Of. The. Year! ‘Nuff said.

The Gist: A space crew of three has to survive a Russian nuclear explosion and try to get back to Earth in one piece.

The Highlights: When James Cameron says that Gravity is “the best space film ever done,” well, what else do you have to say? In my humble opinion, Alfonso Cuarón‘s Gravity is the best space movie I have seen. It is perfect. It is outstanding at every level, from Cuarón’s groundbreaking state-of-the-art direction to the convincing performances to the edge-of-your-seat thrill ride script, finding a problem with this film will be almost impossible. What is even more outstanding is the perfect balance between high valued commercial entertainment and artistic filmmaking. It’s 3D is breathtaking and revolutionary, you empathize with the characters, you’re wowed by the visual grandeur, your heart pounds at its relentless claustrophobic pace and you can’t believe you experienced all of it in 90 minutes. It’s scary, sad, and happy. If you don’t enjoy yourself watching this movie, there is a problem with you. Gravity, see you at the Oscars!

The Lowlights: Nada.

Pay or Nay?: Pay for it. Here’s what you’ll experience watching it: You’ll revel in its elegant and beautiful scenery, you’ll think it’s poetry in motion. There is a serene feel to the film until it turns to a heart-pounding survival film hurling a relentless amount of gut-wrenching action sequences that doesn’t stop until a moment of silence. Then quickly the agitation kicks in again up to the final scene where you’ll be able to breathe… either because of death or life. You’ve got to watch it. From what I’ve seen, Gravity is tied with 12 Years A Slave as the Best Picture frontrunner at the Oscars 2014 and it is my best judgement that Alfonso Cuarón will win Best Director throughout the whole award season. It’ll be the first time a Mexican director does that.
