‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ is not only number one with $80.3 million dollars, but it is also 2013’s highest opening, which are great news for the Disney film. There were many things pushing this movie forward, the fact that it’s derived from a classic, it has a well known hot cast and a respected director. Even if the film was a hit and miss with critics, audiences really seem to have enjoyed a trip back down the yellow brick road.
Last week’s number one ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ plummeted to number two with $10 million dollars. This film on the other hand has been a disappointment in numbers not even reaching its production costs. Despite being a family film, it was no competition for ‘Oz’.
Another champion at the box office is ‘Identity Thief’ even if it fell to number three with $6.3 million dollars; this film has earned way beyond what anyone expected it to. The comedy has stayed on top since it opened.
